How to keep your bathroom smelling good

How to make your bathroom smell good

Your bathroom is one of the biggest breeding grounds for bacteria in the house, so it’s crucial to keep it as clean as can be. But what many don’t realise is that a good scrub isn’t the only requirement to keep your bathroom smelling fresh. Make sure you know how to neutralise odours in the bathroom so that it’s a welcoming and inviting place for both you and your family.

Why do scents in the bathroom matter?

Bathrooms, unfortunately, can be a place that can harbour bad smells. This can be as a result of using the toilet, or because of grime build up and damp towels left on racks, there are lots of reasons why a bathroom might start to smell. It’s important to not only keep it clean, but to freshen up your bathroom as frequently as you can to keep those smells at bay. Fortunately for you, Air Wick® has all the tips you need to make your bathroom smell nice.

The best bathroom scents

When it comes to your bathroom, you’ll want scents that are pleasant without being overpowering, as this can be a bad combination for rooms receptive to lots of smells. And if you think of your bathroom as your sanctuary, you’ll want to think about scents that can be used to recreate a fresh, spa-like setting and offer a clean, calming space.

Fresh scents: It’s important that your bathroom utilises lighter fragrance notes such as fresh scents to instantly refresh and rejuvenate, as well as give you that relaxing, spa-like feeling. One way to achieve a light and lovely bathroom scent is with something like Spring Delight, with its fresh and invigorating aroma.

Linen scents: As mentioned, bathroom scents are well suited to something soft and subtle – and what better way to achieve this than with a linen fragrance? You can get this by opting for Linen, which can bring the crisp, cool elegance of fine linen to life.

Luxury retreat: Picture this. Your hot bubble bath is ready, and your book is waiting on the side. All that’s missing is a scent that will transport you somewhere tranquil, letting your mind drift away from the real world. Our tropical scents allow you to escape to that lush island oasis during you-time, whether you’re looking for something like Island Mango or Mediterranean Sun.

How to get rid of bad bathroom smells

There are a few simple steps that you can take to ensure unwanted smells don’t make a reappearance. We’ve compiled 5 top tips to make it easier for you:

1. Improve ventilation
It might not be your first thought when the weather is chilly, but keeping your bathroom window open is a key part of combatting unpleasant odours. Ventilation is hugely important for our homes, and some experts even recommend that half of the air volume within your house should be exchanged every hour. [1]

Cracking your bathroom window open will allow bad toilet smells to escape, while also directing a constant stream of air into the room. Fresh, circulating air prevents moisture from accumulating, which in turn stops musty-smelling funguses like mould, damp and mildew from making your bathroom their home.

2. Unblock your drains

If your main suspect is a sewage smell in the bathroom, you might need to give your drains some extra attention. Bathroom drain smells like sewage and rotten eggs occur when debris gets trapped in our pipes, providing a meal for bacteria that expel pungent hydrogen sulfide gas. In one recent study conducted in Germany, antibiotic-resistant bacteria were discovered in three-quarters of homes, and their favourite place to socialise was our shower drains! [2]

3. Check for faults and leaks

A fishy smell in the bathroom can be another symptom of clogged drains or an unclean toilet. But this smell also has some more dangerous culprits, so it’s worth doing a full investigation to stay safe.

One worrying cause of a fishy smell could be an electrical fault caused by a shower or bath leak. When electric wires get wet, the current within the circuit rapidly increases and the appliance blows a fuse. [3] However, in older or faulty appliances, the plastic encasing the wires could burn - leading to a smell reminiscent of fish and in the worst-case scenario, a house fire. Make sure you check the wiring in your bathroom regularly and ensure all sealing is intact. If in any doubt, call an electrician!

4. Try an air purifier

Air purifiers help to cleanse the air of allergens, pollutants and toxins, while also getting rid of bad bathroom smells. Most air purifiers work by using fine sieves to trap particles. [4] They can be expensive but are usually a worthwhile investment as they run on little electricity and can be kept on all day.

5. Invest in sprays and scents

Once you’ve dealt with the source of that unpleasant bathroom smell, you can use Air Wick Odour Neutralising Air Spray to make sure it doesn’t linger in the air any longer. Or, you might prefer to opt for an Air Wick Aerosol - which not only targets and neutralises the smell, but also adds a burst of fragrance. Choose from Crisp Linen and Lilac, Soft Cotton or other fresh scents to add a personal touch back into your space and create a pleasant and relaxing ambience, both in your bathroom and beyond.

Whether you’re looking for ways to eliminate bad odours in your bathroom, ensure it stays continuously fresh, or even get that spa-treatment feeling – Air Wick® has something for you. And remember, if you’re looking for an extra special way to help you unwind – why not light a candle for some scented chill, too?
