What does lavender do?

WHAT DOES LAVENDER DO?

Known to most as a purple plant with a potent smell, lavender is a herb that is often grown for its essential oil. Lavender (or Lavandula angustifolia), is one of the most common essential oils due to the many powerful benefits that it exudes. Lavender oil is particularly thought to be good for its relaxing effects on the body and mind and overall therapeutic properties.

WHAT CAN LAVENDER OIL BE USED FOR?

Lavender oil has many different uses and is most often applied in diluted forms to the skin or inhaled through aromatherapy. Here are just some of the ways that it is thought to improve physical and mental wellbeing:

It is an anti-inflammatory and can be beneficial to your skin, from acne to eczema and wrinkles.

It is also thought to have alleviating properties and could speed up the process of wound-healing, from cuts to scrapes and burns.

It is often used for its anti-anxiety and stress relieving benefits, and studies have found that it may improve sleep and insomnia.[2]

HOW IS LAVENDER ESSENTIAL OIL MADE?

Lavender essential oil is usually made through a process known as a steam distillation process. This involves pushing steam through the plant in order to collect the essential oil from the lavender. Freshly picked lavender plants are suspended over boiling water and the steam produced extracts the natural oils from the plant. As the steam rises, it is captured in a vessel and pushed along tubing, where it is cooled and condensed back into water. As the water and oil separate, the oil can be collected.

HOW TO DIFFUSE LAVENDER ESSENTIAL OIL

Diffusion is a method of dispersing essential oil molecules into the air and is a great way of reaping the aromatherapy benefits of lavender essential oil.

Lavender oil can be diffused in a few different ways, including inhaling the oil directly from a bottle or placing a few drops on furnishings or a tissue kept nearby. However, these methods of aromatherapy will not diffuse the scent through a whole room. For this reason, a great way to diffuse lavender essential oil is by using a diffuser such as a reed diffusers, battery-powered diffusers or electrical plug ins that use a low heat to evaporate the essential oils into the air or fans that will disperse the aroma further around the home.

DOES LAVENDER OIL HELP YOU SLEEP?

Lavender oil is used often in aromatherapy as it is known for being a natural sleeping aid, so how does lavender make you sleepy? It is thought that herbal fragrances such as lavender are thought to calm and relax, reducing stress levels and anxiety, therefore helping people get off to sleep. Studies in recent years have supported this further, with findings that suggest lavender oil can in fact help to promote sleep, and in some instances, fight insomnia.[3]
